This requires designing highly scalable, distributed, and reliable systems.About the RoleWe are seeking a Tech Lead Manager (TLM) who combines the technical depth of a Staff Engineer with the people leadership of an Engineering Manager. You will own architecture and technical direction for a critical product area while also managing and growing a team of engineers. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of hands-on system design, cross-team influence, and team leadership. You will remain close to the technology—guiding design decisions, reviewing code, and solving complex problems—while also ensuring your team is effective, motivated, and delivering high-impact results.If you enjoy building 0 to 1, this would be a great fit! Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Architecture Own and drive end-to-end system architecture across frontend, backend, and platform layers of a 0 to 1 productDesign scalable, distributed, and resilient systems supporting high-volume workflowsDefine and standardize architecture patterns, APIs, and data modelsLead design reviews and influence technical decisions across the product and sometimes across multiple products & teamsPartner with Architects and leadership to shape long-term technical strategyIdentify and address system-wide scalability, security, performance, and reliability challengesHands-On EngineeringStay actively involved in critical parts of the codebase and system designContribute to design, debugging, and implementation of complex featuresLead by example in writing high-quality, maintainable, production-grade codePrototype new technologies and validate architectural approachesPeople Management & Team LeadershipManage, mentor, and grow a team of engineers (career development, performance, coaching)Build a high-performing, inclusive engineering cultureLead hiring, onboarding, and retention effortsProvide continuous feedback and support career progressionExecution & DeliveryOwn delivery of complex, cross-functional initiatives from concept to productionTranslate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical architecture, design and execution plansBalance technical investments vs. product deliveryEnsure predictable execution and high-quality outcomesEngineering Excellence & OperationsEstablish and enforce best practices for testing, CI/CD, observability, and reliabilityDefine and track SLAs and key system metricsDrive improvements in performance, scalability, and developer productivityEnsure systems meet security and compliance standardsCross-Functional InfluencePartner with product, design, infrastructure, and operations teamsAlign technical direction across multiple teams and domainsInfluence roadmap through strong technical and business judgmentMinimum Qualifications (Must Have)10+ years of experience in full stack software engineering1+ years of engineering management experience (or equivalent team leadership experience)Proven track record of owning architecture and delivering large-scale distributed systemsStrong expertise in:Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, ReactBackend: Java, Node.js, Ruby, or similarDeep understanding of system design, microservices, APIs (REST/GraphQL), and event-driven systemsExperience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and services (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, Storage, CDN, etc.)Solid understanding of data modeling (SQL & NoSQL)Experience driving technical decisions across teamsHands-on experience with CI/CD, testing strategies, and DevOps practicesProven ability to lead teams while remaining technically hands-onAI usage in software developmentPreferred QualificationsExperience with mobile development (Android)Familiarity with observability platforms and distributed tracingExperience with micro-frontend or modular architecturesGoogle Cloud certification (Developer or Architect)Experience building or integrating AI/ML systems or LLMsContributions to open-source projectsAdditional DetailsThe base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:C$142,400 - C$190,100Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including RRSP eligibility, various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave).
