Our platform powers millions of daily interactions across 190+ markets, enabling seamless buying experiences for customers worldwide.Join our Core Buyer Engineering team to build innovative, scalable systems that shape the future of ecommerce.As a Senior MTS – Architect (Senior Staff Software Engineer), you will lead the design and development of large-scale, distributed systems that power eBay’s buyer experience.You will drive technical strategy, architecture, and innovation, while mentoring engineers and influencing cross-team engineering decisions to deliver high-performance, reliable, and accessible systems.You will leverage strong backend expertise in Java or Kotlin (mandatory) to build and scale mission-critical services.ResponsibilitiesDesign, build, and evolve scalable, distributed, and highly available systemsDevelop high-performance backend services using Java/KotlinEnsure reliability, performance, and accessibility across the platformTranslate complex business problems into clean, scalable technical solutionsOwn and drive architecture for large functional domainsEstablish and guide engineering best practices and design standardsDefine and influence technical strategy and long-term roadmapsBalance short-term delivery with long-term scalability and innovationPartner with Product, Design, and Data teams to deliver impactful solutionsMentor engineers, conduct design/code reviews, and elevate engineering qualityDrive testable, maintainable, and high-quality code using modern engineering practicesLead release processes, reliability initiatives, and on-call for a 24/7 platformIdentify system and productivity bottlenecks and drive improvementsDesign systems with flexibility to support evolving business needsQualificationsTechnical ExpertiseExpert-level backend development experience in Java or Kotlin (mandatory)Proven experience building and scaling distributed, high-availability systemsStrong system design expertise (APIs, messaging systems, databases, cloud infrastructure)Experience driving architecture and technical strategy across teamsFamiliarity with modern DevOps practices and Shift-Left approachesExperience10+ years of software engineering experienceProven track record of leading large-scale, complex system deliveryExperience driving cross-team technical initiatives end-to-endEducationBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)Soft Skills & LeadershipStrong decision-making skills in ambiguous and fast-paced environmentsHigh ownership, accountability, and excellent communication skillsProven ability to influence and align stakeholders across teamsPassion for mentoring and building strong engineering cultureGrowth & Learning MindsetSelf-driven with strong curiosity and continuous learning attitudeActively participates in knowledge sharing (internal/external)Continuously expands into adjacent domains (product, systems, leadership)Why Join eBayAt eBay, your work touches millions of buyers and sellers around the world.
