This role will have primary responsibility for U.S. sales and use tax compliance and planning, while also overseeing foreign VAT/GST compliance across multiple jurisdictions. The company’s revenue is predominantly generated in the United States, making U.S. sales tax a core focus of this position, with expanding international operations requiring strong VAT oversight and coordination with external advisors. This role will partner closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal, and external service providers to ensure compliance, manage risk, and support business growth.Key Responsibilities:U.S. Sales & Use TaxOwn the end-to-end U.S. sales and use tax function, including nexus analysis, taxability determinations, registrations, filings, and paymentsManage sales tax compliance across states and local jurisdictions, including exemption certificates and resale documentationSupport audits by state and local tax authorities and manage responses, settlements, and documentationAdvise the business on sales tax implications of new products, pricing models, go-to-market strategies, and system changesMonitor and interpret changes in U.S. indirect tax laws and assess impact on the businessInternational VAT / GSTOversee foreign VAT/GST compliance in multiple jurisdictions (including EMEA and other regions, as applicable)Coordinate with external advisors on VAT registrations, returns, audits, and advisory mattersReview VAT positions related to cross-border transactions, intercompany arrangements, and digital servicesSupport VAT considerations in acquisitions, integrations, and business expansionsProcess, Systems & ControlsPartner with Accounting and IT on indirect tax processes within ERP and billing systemsDrive process improvements, automation, and scalability of indirect tax complianceSupport internal controls, SOX requirements, and documentation related to indirect taxesCross-Functional SupportCollaborate with Accounting on monthly/quarterly close matters related to indirect taxesSupport Legal and Procurement on contract review and indirect tax considerationsProvide clear, practical guidance to non-tax stakeholders across the organizationQualifications:RequiredBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field5–10+ years of relevant indirect tax experience (level dependent)Strong hands-on experience with U.S. sales and use taxWorking knowledge of VAT/GST compliance in multiple foreign jurisdictionsExperience managing indirect tax audits and interacting with tax authoritiesAbility to operate independently in a fast-paced, growing environmentPreferredCPA, JD, or MSTExperience in technology, SaaS, or digital services businessesExperience working with third-party compliance providers and tax enginesPrior exposure to M&A, integrations, or international expansionWhat We’re Looking ForStrong technical foundation with a practical, business-oriented mindsetComfortable owning processes and building structure where neededClear communicator who can translate complex tax rules into actionable guidanceOrganized, detail-oriented, and proactive in identifying and managing risk#LI-AN2Why Proofpoint?At Proofpoint, we believe that an exceptional career experience includes a comprehensive compensation and benefits package.
