This role ensures that cabling standards, labeling, and documentation align with industry best practices and internal operational policies. Working within the Cross-Functional Operations Support team, the engineer collaborates with network, electrical, and mechanical teams to support seamless infrastructure performance and enable efficient, scalable connectivity across customer and internal environments.ResponsibilitiesCabling Design and ImplementationPlan, design, and implement structured cabling systems for data center white space and MMR (Meet-Me Room) environmentsExecute copper and fiber optic cabling installations in compliance with ANSI/TIA/EIA and company standardsOversee patching layouts, cable routing, labeling, and termination in both horizontal and vertical pathwaysSupport installation of new cages, racks, cross-connects, and customer deploymentsOperations and MaintenancePerform routine inspection, testing, and certification of cabling systems for performance and complianceTroubleshoot fiber and copper connectivity issues using OTDR, light meters, and other diagnostic toolsMaintain cabling integrity, identify aging or damaged infrastructure, and recommend corrective actionsCoordinate with field engineers and vendors during maintenance windows to minimize impact on servicesDocumentation and ComplianceMaintain accurate as-built drawings, labeling schemes, and patch records within internal systems (e.g., DCIM, Maximo, or similar platforms)Ensure cabling works comply with safety, quality, and environmental standardsParticipate in audits and ensure adherence to internal and external compliance requirements (ISO, ISMS, or customer standards)Cross-Functional CollaborationWork closely with other operations units — network, transmission, power, facility, and customer operationsProvide cabling insights and technical input during project design reviews, upgrades, or change management activitiesSupport capacity planning and optimization efforts in collaboration with data center managementContinuous ImprovementIdentify opportunities to improve structured cabling processes, materials, and installation methods for efficiency and reliabilityParticipate in training, cross-functional knowledge sharing, and operational excellence initiativesSupport and contribute to the site’s preventive maintenance and risk mitigation programsQualificationsEducation & CertificationBachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical / Telecommunications / Computer Engineering, or related technical fieldBICSI certification (e.g., Installer, Technician, or RCDD) preferredValid Fiber Optic certification (FOA, CFOT, or equivalent) is an advantageExperience3–5 years of experience in structured cabling or data center infrastructure supportProven hands-on experience with copper and fiber installation, termination, and testingStrong familiarity with cable management systems, containment, patch panels, and labeling standardsExperience working in Tier III or Tier IV data centers is an added advantageCore CompetenciesTechnical Expertise: Deep understanding of structured cabling standards, best practices, and industry codesAttention to Detail: Strong focus on cable routing, labeling accuracy, and system documentationCollaboration: Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary operations teamAnalytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills and proactive issue resolutionChange Readiness: Flexible, adaptive, and able to support evolving data center technologies and upgradesWorking ConditionsData center environment with exposure to controlled temperatures, raised floors, and high noise levelsRequires physical activity including lifting, bending, and cable handlingMay involve after-hours maintenance windows or on-call duties as requiredEquinix is committed to ensuring that our employment process is open to all individuals, including those with a disability.
