Principal Mechanical EngineerStatus: Exempt (salaried)Department: 350 Hydrogen Systems EngineeringPosition SummaryThe Principal Mechanical Engineer, Hydrogen is responsible for leading portions of Plug Power’s development, operation, and continual improvement of hydrogen fueling infrastructure at both customer- and company-owned locations. They will primarily work within the Plug Power Hydrogen Systems organization, including the mechanical, control, electrical, service, and fabrication teams, as well as external vendors’ engineering staffs, to deliver world-class hydrogen fueling systems.The ideal candidate should possess a background in chemical or mechanical engineering, with a focus on process engineering, planning, execution of technical design, and system integration. They must be willing to travel to deployment locations when required to assist in unique commissioning or complex troubleshooting efforts; up to 10% of the time.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Principal Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for planning and execution of technical design, system integration, cost and risk assessment, and compliance assessment with codes and standards.This role requires strong technical experience in Mechanical Engineering of equipment involving mechanical, electrical, controls, and code compliance.The Candidate will have subject matter expertise in systems engineering fundamentals (Requirements, Functional Analysis, and Design/Manufacture) and will help identify, support, and execute tasks to achieve program goals and to develop innovative engineering solutions including but not limited to prototyping, developing, and continuously improving product cost, efficiency, manufacturability, serviceability, and user experience.Drive cross-functional product architecture between Genfuel product subsystems (valve assemblies, fitting systems, support structures, electrical and control assemblies, etc.) and across integrated product teams to unify product direction.Collaborate with engineers, designers, technicians, NPI (new product introduction manufacturing), quality, and suppliers to procurement and be responsible for integrating mechanical, structural, and electrical/control components.In this role the Principal Mechanical Engineer will support further growth and team progression by mentoring and guiding early-stage engineersAdapt and thrive in a dynamic work environmentConduct engineering studies, including assessing tradeoffs and system operability and flexibility; prepare and present results to key stakeholders.Review and provide input on Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and control strategies.Prepare, review, and approve field mechanical and electrical installation diagrams, plant layouts, PFDs, P&IDs, and bills of materials.Create, modify, and maintain P&ID drawings using proper drafting standards and follows Management of Change (MOC) information (MOC redline/comments)Participate in Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) assessments.Provide, support and/or create DVP&Rs (Design Verification Plan & Report), DPPs (Design Project Plan), ECRs (Engineering Change Request), ECOs (Engineering Change Order) and SWOs (Work orders).Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions; support the philosophy of the organization to provide high-performing technology to maximize customer satisfaction.Perform all other duties as assigned and required within role.Education and ExperienceBachelor’s of Science degree in chemical or mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited institution with a focus on process engineering; a Master’s degree is preferred. Other relevant technical fields of study will be considered for candidates with a demonstrated proficiency in process engineering.20+ years of related experience including a strong track record of leading product development programs and product launches.Experienced in the review of engineering drawingsExperience with Engineering Change ManagementAbility to read, analyze and interpret various technical procedures and reportsExperience and understanding of configuration management practices and databases such as WindchillMust have working knowledge of NFPA 2, 70 & 79 and piping codes - ASME B31.1, B31.3, PED.Must have working knowledge of ISA and PIP piping symbology.Proficient in identifying and validating correct field installation of mechanical equipment and piping componentsExperience preparing, reviewing, and approving PFDs, P&IDs, and bills of materials.Ability to write reports and keep accurate documentationA P.E. license is preferred, but not required.Exceptional data analysis and presentation skillsExperience in the following spheres of activity is highly valued:High pressure gases and components.Gas processing and / or dispensing equipment.Cryogenic fluids and components.Developing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs).Control theory and its application to chemical processes.Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively.Ability to travel occasionally; up to 10% of the time.Dynamic interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences and stakeholders at all levels.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Must possess the highest ethical standards and a commitment to work quality.Teamwork oriented and focused.Must be self-motivated.Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Outlook
