Mechanical Engineer, Reliability Engineering Status: Exempt (salaried) Department: Reliability EngineeringPosition SummaryThe Mechanical Engineer is responsible to support Plug Power’s initiatives to improve the mechanical and electromechanical components used in fuel cell systems. These components include pumps, blowers, fans, compressors, heat exchangers, sensors, switches, solenoids, motors and motor controllers at both customer and company owned locations. This position will primarily work with the internal Plug Power engineering, operations, and service teams in addition to external supplier’s engineering staff to ensure these components have the highest level of reliability possible. The ideal candidate should possess a background in complex mechanical systems/components, as well as in structured problem solving and/or continuous improvement methodologies. In addition, the candidate must be willing to travel to locations as required to assist in complex root cause analysis and permanent corrective action efforts; up to 15% of the time. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple project assignments and willing to learn and adapt in a fast-paced engineering organization.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesWork with systems, chemical, and electrical engineering teams to define requirements for a wide variety of mechanical and electromechanical components.Perform engineering analysis to define critical design parameters and predict design latitude.Create accurate, complete, and concise engineering documentation to define critical component specifications and requirements.Develop statistically based test plans to optimize designs and verify design latitude.Write clear test results that can be used to verify engineering analysis and drive fact-based decisions.Coordinate design changes with the systems, electrical, controls and packaging teams.Perform/review tolerance analysis and maintain proficiency related to ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles.Lead design changes through the enterprise change process.Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of Plug Power products and related understanding of existing designs and functionality.Help to manage project schedules and resolve problems as necessary to deliver on product and functionality expectations.Represent Plug Power in a professional manner at all times and in all interactions.Perform all other duties as assignedEducation and ExperienceBS degree in mechanical engineering.A minimum of three (3) years working experience in project-based engineering functions.Experience in any of the following spheres of activity is preferred and highly valued:Structured Problem-Solving methodologies (such as Kepner Tregoe, Shainin, Design for Six Sigma, etc.)Continuous Improvement methodologies (such as Traditional Six Sigma, 5 Whys, Fault Tree Analysis, etc.)Preferable to have experience with FEA and CFD.Experience with 2D and 3D CAD systems, PTC Creo preferred.Working knowledge of vibration, thermal and mechanical fatigue design and testing is highly desired.Proven analytical abilities with strong attention to detailAbility to manage complex projects and multi-task effectivelyUncompromising dedication to quality.Mechanical systems expertise and troubleshooting ability.Ability to travel occasionally; up to 15% of the timeTo other Plug Power sites for assistance in troubleshooting and problem resolutionTo component suppliers for assistance in troubleshooting and problem resolutionPossess computer/software skills as applicable to the position including but not limited to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project, and VisioDriven and self-motivated with excellent follow-through.
