Senior Fuel Cell Engineer - Testing - Rochester Giga FactoryStatus: Exempt (salaried) Department: Stack Engineering – Testing COEPosition SummaryPlug is the industry leader launching products to provide a vertically integrated end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem. Plug’s PEM Electrolyzers produce green hydrogen from renewable electricity, Plug’s hydrogen plants liquify hydrogen, Plug’s cryogenic trucks transport hydrogen at high energy density, and Plug’s fuel cells convert the hydrogen to electricity for a range of motive and stationary applications. These applications include material handling equipment, EV charging, back-up power for critical infrastructure, Class 6 and Class 8 trucks and aerospace applications.Plug is seeking a senior engineer to join us in implementing and developing design verification testing programs for fuel cell stacks and MEAs at Plug’s Innovation Center in in Rochester NY. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in product development, testing, design verification and product validation for technically challenging products in an industrial setting.The primary responsibility will be evaluating state of the art fuel cell stacks, materials, and technology. As a Senior Engineer you will implement existing testing and design verification programs, develop new testing methods, and debug new test equipment, contributing to enhancement of fuel cell stack performance and durability and to determine if the fuel cell meets requirements for a given application. Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop comprehensive understanding of the product and technology road map, plan testing and validation strategies for evaluation and commercialization of fuel cell stacks, through communication with stake holders, research, and other resources.Execute test plans and test protocols to evaluate fuel cell stack performance, new materials, and technology. Lead design verification and product validation.Develop new test protocols or tailor existing protocols to determine if fuel cell stacks and components meet specific product requirements.Document and analyze failures using techniques like 8D, root cause analysis, statistics, and other advanced techniques in materials science with the help of experts and propose solutions.Perform characterization of various parameters on the fuel cell stack, conduct parameter sensitivity testing, DOE, define optimal running conditions for the stack and define system boundary conditions.Conduct durability and accelerated stress tests on fuel cell stacks to predict product lifetime and compare the durability of fuel cell stack designs and components. Identify key sources of performance loss and failure modes.Conduct shock and vibration tests, environmental tests like thermal cycling, freeze – thaw tests, to prove safety and certification of product.Understand critical technology performance specifications and common field failure modes and design protocols to test those specific items.Continuously improve data analysis procedures, testing systems and protocol, test equipment, test setups and instrumentation, troubleshoot equipment as needed, automate operations.Understand the design and properties of components being tested and how attributes of the design interact with the test results.Interface with Systems Engineering in identifying and creating stack sub systems requirements from a performance perspective.Mentor junior staff and technicians and develop relationships with cross-functional staff.Manage multiple projects with a focus on delivering high quality results in a timely fashion.Always represent Plug with the highest professional and ethical standards and in all interactions.Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, or other relevant field of study. Master’s degree preferred.7 years of relevant work experience, preferably within a high technology product development and manufacturing environment. Experience in developing and testing technically complex products such as fuel cells, automotive engines or power train, power generation, renewables, energy storage products like batteries, flow batteries, capacitors, or similar products is highly preferred.Expertise in use of instrumentation hardware and diagnosis on thermal, fluidics, structural, and electrochemical aspects of a product. Thorough understanding of engineering fundamentals in those fields.Exceptional data analysis and presentation skills. Knowledge of MATLAB, VBA, or similar software to analyze data and create models is preferred.Strong hands-on experience working in a lab and test environment and familiar with various testing equipment and tools and operating test stations using LabVIEW or similar programs.Previous experience in testing product for certification and compliance to SAE and ISO standards.Ability to travel as needed to carry out duties of the position up to 10%.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with diverse audiences and stakeholders at all levels.Ability to manage multiple complex projects with excellent follow-through, multi-task effectively with attention to detail.Must be driven, self-motivated and passionate to solve complex technical problems.Must possess the highest ethical standards and a commitment to work quality.Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office software.Estimated Base Salary Range:$75,240.00 - $112,860.00
