Engineering Lab Manager/Associate Manager Status: Exempt Department: EngineeringLocation: RochesterPosition SummaryPlug is the industry leader behind the end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem. We produce and liquefy Hydrogen. Our PEM electrolyzer solutions produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity and water. We transport Hydrogen with a fleet of cryogenic trucks, store and handle Hydrogen and provide dispensers for fueling. Plug’s Hydrogen fuel cells power a spectrum of applications from material handling to Class 6 and Class 8 trucks to EV charging to aerospace to back-up power for critical infrastructure. We are seeking an Engineering Lab Manager at our gigafactory in Rochester NY to oversee day to day lab operations and supervise technicians that support testing of fuel cells.This role will be responsible for fostering coordination and communication between functional groups and optimizing lab performance. Safety is core to our culture, and best practices should be exhibited and promoted from day one. The Lab Manager should be able to assist technicians in trouble shooting equipment and product, data collection and analysis as required.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesOversee the day-to-day operations for MEA, Stack, and System testing which will include running tests 24 x 7 and/or multiple work shifts.Collaborate with Engineering leaders and engineers to maximize test capabilities in space and ensure tests are executed as planned. Manage the flow of test hardware from builds to scheduling on test stations and disposition of hardware post testing.Manage the builds of short stack hardware required for stack testing. Coordinate the availability of test system for systems testing. Coordinate the test hardware and software.Ensure that the test data is of the highest quality by monitoring the test and store data as per guidelines, provide test summary to engineers and engineering leaders.Collaborate with Facilities to commission test stations and make modifications and improvements. Keep track of lab requirements, such as safety, power, hydrogen, ventilation, compressed air, coolant, purity of reactants and coolant, and building codes. Serve as the main communication channel between Engineering and Facilities.Collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team for implementing safe working practices and zero injuries.Ensure lab spaces follow 5S on a frequent basis: Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.Ensure test equipment calibration procedures are established and performed on schedule by collaborating with the teams responsible for the same.Establish laboratory procedures and policies in line with corporate best practices from an EHS and Facilities perspective.Ensure that test equipment follows an established preventative maintenance program, repair or arrange for repair of non-functional test equipment.Hire, train, and supervise test technicians, ensure established test methods, and best practices in EHS are followed. Provide leadership, technical guidance, and mentorship to strengthen the team.Perform all other duties as assigned and required within role.Education and Experience 5 to 7+ years of experience in an engineering organization or in a technology company working in a laboratory. 2 years of supervisory experience required for Manager level.BS in a STEM field is required, Engineering preferred.Knowledge of engineering test methods and concepts strongly preferred: HALT/HASS, shock & vibration, thermal testing, and statistics and mathematical tools (Minitab, JMP, Matlab, etc.)Familiarity with 8D process for problem solving, reading schematics, piping and instrumentation diagrams, understanding control algorithms, troubleshooting and testing experience is desirable.Strong data analysis and presentation skills.Familiarity with hydrogen safety standards (such as NFPA2) and building codes is a plus.The candidate should be creative, self-motivated, and able to lead a team within a fast-paced engineering organization.Ability to manage complex projects, multi-task effectively along with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences and stakeholders at all levels.Ability to travel occasionally; up to 10% of the time.Exempt employees are expected to work as many hours as is necessary to complete their job responsibilities.
