The Responsible AI (RAI) team sits within the Integrity team and reports up to Workday’s Chief Compliance Officer, providing access to senior executives from around the company as well as Workday’s Board of Directors. RAI is a team of cross-disciplinary social and data scientists and technology experts who convene experts from around the company to advise on the development and maintenance of policies and procedures to map, measure, manage, and govern risks arising from the development of AI solutions.About the RoleThis is an exciting opportunity to shape and influence the RAI program at Workday. You will report directly to the Head of Responsible AI, leading our RAI research and development efforts to ensure Workday’s RAI program is grounded in innovative research. As a research scientist, you will set an independent high-impact research agenda, focused on identifying and testing novel RAI methods and working closely with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and processes to deliver high-quality, trustworthy, and responsible AI products to our customers. In this role, you will also have an opportunity to actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings to continue to expand Workday’s thought leadership in the space. This is an applied research scientist role on a goal-oriented team. This role requires thought leadership and creative problem solving to support the technical implementation of the Responsible AI program. The team’s remit is to develop and maintain Workday’s RAI governance framework and deliverables. In this role you will identify, scope, and engage in research projects that support the development of effective corporate RAI Governance initiatives. On this team, we understand that progress comes sometimes in incremental steps and other times in giant leaps. We adjust our approach to current conditions, never making the perfect the enemy of the good, and always orienting towards what’s best for Workday. We roll up our sleeves and dive in, working to build and cultivate relationships with our stakeholders. This is a purposeful, high visibility program with a bold agenda and senior executive support.ResponsibilitiesLead research projects to advance Workday’s RAI research agenda, such as evaluating bias and fairness in ML algorithms, identifying methods that promote explainability and interpretability, exploring RAI concepts for emerging AI technologies like LLMs such as efficient red teaming/alignment with human feedbackFormulate problems, gather data, generate hypotheses, conduct studies and experiments, synthesize results, and propose and demonstrate methodologies to inform responsible AI development. Collaborate and build trust with researchers, engineers, product, and legal teams to ensure alignment between RAI program research efforts, Workday’s AI development and deployment practices, all while optimizing value for customers.  Identify and prioritize new and emerging research problems and opportunities for Workday’s RAI programOrganize and pilot the development of external-facing technical documentation and reports describing our AI/ML products, features, and underlying platform technologies to promote transparency of Workday’s AI/ML solutions Participate in top-tier academic conferences to broaden the impact of your contributions, in human-centered technology and AI, Machine Learning / AI, as well as specialized conferences on responsible and ethical AI, Industrial Organizational Psychology, and other industry conferencesAct as a subject matter expert and thought leader in responsible AI, internally for the company and at industry conferences, and contribute to publications and thought leadership contentAbout YouBasic QualificationsPhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or other relevant quantitative or engineering field, or related discipline, including interdisciplinary work, or equivalent research experience2+ years of experience working successfully in a corporate settingExperience publishing papers within technical and/or social science research areas Other QualificationsDemonstrated ability to design and execute on a research agendaPeer-reviewed publications in machine learning, AI, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data science, or related technical fieldsHave a demonstrated research interest and track record in one of the following domain areas related to Responsible AI: ML fairness, explainability, validity or robustness Strong machine learning and NLP fundamentals Sufficient software development skills for technical implementations, demonstrations, and prototyping of research concepts in a practical setting (e.g., Python, R, Tableau, SQL)Excellent critical thinking and collaboration skillsRespect for different perspectives with ability to communicate clearly about technical concepts and business implicationsGrowth mindset and drive to learn with an inclination to get things doneCan-do approach, patience when needed, and a good sense of humor! As a part of the total compensation package, this role may be eligible for the Workday Bonus Plan or a role-specific commission/bonus, as well as annual refresh stock grants.
