Principal Engineer, Fuel Cell System TestingStatus: Exempt (Salaried) Department: Center of Excellence (279)Position SummaryPlug is the industry leader behind the end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem. We are engaged in producing and liquefying Hydrogen, our PEM electrolyzer solutions produce carbon-free green hydrogen using renewable electricity and water. We transport Hydrogen with a fleet of cryogenic trucks, store and handle Hydrogen and provide dispensers for fueling. By combining hydrogen with Plug fuel cells, we can power a spectrum of applications from material handling to Class 6 and Class 8 trucks to EV charging to aerospace to back-up power for critical infrastructure. We are seeking a Principal Engineer for Fuel Cell System Testing at our headquarters in Latham NY.The position will be responsible for testing and validation of fuel cell systems and development of test methods. The Engineer will evaluate state of the art fuel cell systems and technology in the lab and in the field, and continuously improve performance and life of fuel cell systems. They will work closely with the Design teams to understand product requirements and specifications and provide feedback for immediate improvements and long-term product vision. Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop comprehensive understanding of the product and technology road map, plan testing and validation strategies and methods for evaluation and commercialization of fuel cell systems using expertise in the field, through research, and other resources.Develop and execute test plans and test protocols to evaluate fuel cell system performance, new materials, and technology. Lead design verification and product validation.Perform characterization of various parameters on the fuel cell system, conduct sensitivity testing, construct and run DOE for optimization of running conditions.Conduct durability and accelerated stress tests on fuel cell systems, identify failure modes and diagnostic parameters for life prediction.Conduct shock and vibration tests, environmental tests like thermal cycling, freeze – thaw tests, cold starts, and to prove safety and certification of product.Continuously improve data analysis procedures, testing systems and protocol, test equipment, test setups and instrumentation, troubleshoot equipment as needed, automate operations.Document and analyze failures using techniques like 8D, root cause analysis, statistics, and other advanced techniques.Coach and mentor team members to higher levels of excellence in test strategy, methods, test setups, data analysis and test reports.Participate in design reviews supporting development of new products and changes to existing products.Manage multiple projects with a focus on delivering high quality results in a timely fashion.Travel to customer locations, vendors, and suppliers to perform technical functions including repair and troubleshooting as required.Always represent Plug Power with the highest professional and ethical standards and in all interactions.Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, or other relevant field of study. Master’s degree or a PhD is preferred.10+ years of relevant work experience within a technology manufacturing environment. Experience in developing, testing, and commercializing technically complex products such as fuel cells, flow batteries, or similar products is highly preferred. Working knowledge of fuel cell and fuel cell system failure modes will be a big plus.Deep expertise in use of instrumentation hardware and diagnosis on thermal, fluidics, structural, and electrochemical aspects of a product. Thorough understanding of engineering fundamentals in those fields.Exceptional data analysis and presentation skills. Knowledge of MATLAB, VBA, or similar software to analyze data and create models is preferred.Strong hands-on experience working in a lab and test environment and familiar with various testing equipment and tools and operating test stations using LabVIEW or similar programs.Previous experience in testing product for certification and compliance to SAE and ISO standards.Ability to travel as needed to carry out duties of the position up to 10%.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with diverse audiences and stakeholders at all levels.Ability to manage multiple complex projects with excellent follow-through, multi-task effectively with attention to detail.Must be driven, self-motivated and passionate to solve complex technical problems.Must possess the highest ethical standards and a commitment to work quality.Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office software.Pay Rate:$86,815.00 - $138,904.00We offer a fantastic total rewards package at Plug, and a brief summary is below:✓Base salary is determined on a number of factors including but not limited to education, experience, skills, and geography.
