Principal Mechanical Engineer – NextGen SolutionsStatus: Exempt (salaried)Department: NextGen SolutionsLocation: Latham, NY (onsite position)Position SummaryThe Principal Mechanical Engineer will play a key role at both system & component level in the specification, design, optimization, testing, integration, and support of fuel cell platforms into mobility & stationary applications. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will carry architecture trade studies and technology analysis to map performance & sizing requirements at platform level (fuel cell, thermal management, system interactions, safety analysis, certification, power management, battery) and component level (air compressors, valves, sensors, pumps, fans, and other balance of plant hardware) to determine optimum operating conditions as well as establish requirements at system and subsystem level. This candidate must be able to effectively communicate within the cross-functional team (electrical, design, controls, SW, NPI, service, technicians) and with suppliers/partners during the selection and integration of components into the fuel cell system. The candidate should be creative, initiative-taking, able to manage multiple project assignments within a fast-paced engineering organization.Prior experience with Hydrogen, Fuel Cell & their application is desired.Principle AccountabilitiesInterface with customers or other organizations (internal or external) as needed to capture, maintain & advise system design, mechanical design requirements, integration scenarios, codes, and standards per market application.Prime lead on driving resolution for demonstrator system/subsystem issues, including root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions. Decompose resolutions to appropriate cross-functional teams, both internal and external to NextGen.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesCreate and maintain accurate, complete, and concise engineering documentation to define specifications and requirements, including engineering design, inspection, verification, and test plans.Conduct detailed engineering analysis and calculations to define and optimize critical design parameters and predict performance.Drive application and fuel cell level Functional Safety lifecycle process (Hazard, LOPA, FMEA, Fault Tree, etc.)Design fluid and thermal subsystems including documentation of requirements and specifications, component and subsystem testing, and integration in application.Develop and maintain analytical models including FEA and CFD analyses.Carry system & fuel cell level simulation analysis to generate and decompose system, sub-system and component level requirements (MATLAB, Simulink).Develop and execute test plans for fuel cell subsystems in laboratory and in the field.Manage projects associated with component development, cost reductions and reliability improvements.Provide technical guidance to other team membersInterface with customers, vendors and business partners for new and existing productsMaintain change control documentation for components and subsystems.Maintain operational guideline documentation for components and subsystems.Some travel required.May perform other duties as assigned.Experience RequirementsFor a Principal Mechanical Engineer, a minimum of 15 years is required. Research work during a relevant engineering Master’s degree may count for up to 1 year and research work during a PhD’s degree may count for up to 3 years.Strong experience in mechanical engineering principles and problem-solving methods.Experience with hydrogen, fuel cell systems, mobility applications desired.Practical experience on applicable industry codes and standards such as CE, IEC, API, ISO, ANSI, ASME, UL, etc.Demonstrated experience for system thinking and creative problem solving.Demonstrated analytical abilities with needed attention to detail.Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively.Strong communication and presentation skills.Strong organizational skills preferred.Strong teamwork skills.Computer and software systems skills as applicable to position including but not limited to: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.Pay Rate:$86,815.00 - $138,904.00We offer a fantastic total rewards package at Plug, and a brief summary is below:✓Base salary is determined on a number of factors including but not limited to education, experience, skills, and geography.
