This belief inspires us to relentlessly push the boundaries of what is possible today—to enable researchers and clinicians to turn big dreams into impactful genomic discoveries that improve lives and change the course of diseases globally. We are seeking a Sr. Director of Instrument Software to lead a team of testers and developers to deliver software that powers Illumina’s industry-leading DNA sequencing instruments. We are looking for an individual passionate about delivering robust, high-performing software across our entire portfolio, from early concept to on market sustaining. You will partner with key functions across the broader organization including hardware development, bioinformatics, cyber security, quality, and regulatory compliance to guide the strategy and delivery of instrument software. By leveraging your broad understanding of agile development, scalable architecture, and regulatory requirements, you’ll deliver a suite of innovative software products used by research, translational and clinical customers around the world. This role will report directly to the Global Head of Software and Informatics and will be key in helping Illumina achieve its strategic goal of becoming the worlds the leading provider of genomic data generation, aggregation, interpretation, and insights.  Responsibilities: Leads a team of directors and managers accountable for the design, development, testing, and delivery of world-class software applications that control and run on Illumina’s industry-leading DNA sequencing platforms. Lead the definition of the overarching instrument software strategy to develop scalable and sustainable architecture, processes, and standards. Contribute to overall software road mapping and vision in order to achieve corporate goals. Work with architect and product management teams to ensure implemented software architecture aligns with user needs to bring high-value products to market Create and foster strong working relationships with internal R&D groups such as technical product management, hardware development, firmware, cloud platform, bioinformatics and system integration teams. Engage and influence key partner organizations such as quality, cyber security, regulatory, and legal to ensure software remains compliant to necessary standards without sacrificing development agility. Manage department budgets and resources and actively make tradeoff calls between schedule, scope and resources to meet overall program and business objectives Ensure clear communication and escalation of software project status, risk, and recommendations to senior management for entire instrument software portfolio. Manage both new product introduction and on-market sustaining development. Recruit, hire, develop, coach, and manage a high performing team of software developers and testers. Collaborate with geographically dispersed, dotted line development teams for delivery of both NPI and on market releases. Drive innovation at a department level towards continuous improvement of development processes  Ensure organizational level awareness of industry trends and evaluate the applicability of new software technologies to the latest sequencing platforms  Listed responsibilities are an essential, but not exhaustive list, of the usual duties associated with the position. Changes to individual responsibilities may occur due to business needs.  Qualifications: Requires advanced degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering or related field  15+ years of experience in the software development, and 7+ years in managing teams to build/deliver complex products to market Leadership experience including direct management of groups of developers. Experience with communicating and presenting complex concepts to diverse audiences, including VP and executive level Extensive knowledge of SDLC and agile practices, including SCRUM, CI/CD, etc.  Extensive experience with software quality documentation and artifacts, including those required for regulatory compliance. Proven ability to deliver great products on-time and on-budget across multiple projects simultaneously.  Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, and develop high performing software development teams. Demonstrated ability to manage globally distributed groups of employees, contractors, and consultants. Results-oriented individual that thrives in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams. Must be capable of balancing process requirements with agile software delivery. Respectful and inclusive attitude for your colleagues/team members, in addition to your exemplary collaborative nature, drive for innovation, and ability to deliver. Proven ability to self-manage, as well as manage interdisciplinary relationships The estimated base salary range for the Sr Director Instrument Software role based in the United States of America is: $216,200 - $324,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable salary range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
