Staff Materials Scientist
We are looking for a materials scientist with a surface science, physics, or chemistry background to join the advanced development team. The ideal candidate will have experience working with biological assays on surfaces. The individual must have passion and drive to work and lead from the lab. The position will require independent planning, thinking, and execution which will lead to data-driven progress. The ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is crucial to be successful in this role. Strong experimental skills, intuition, and excellent communication skills are required.
What You’ll Be Doing
Developing novel surface chemistries for silicon devices and testing biological assays on them
Developing and building the novel test stands for the purpose of monitoring biochemical processes using fluorescent or electrical readouts
Developing immobilization strategies for biopolymers on silicon, metal oxide, and nobel metal surfaces
Developing chemistries for antifouling properties of proteins, nucleic acids, and other biological molecules of interest
Engaging with various BEOL foundries
Making precision measurements just above the noise floor
Working with a world-class multidisciplinary team of scientists, physicists and engineers
What You’ll Bring to the Team
PhD. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, physics or related discipline
10 years of industrial R&D experience is required
Experience in differential functionalization of materials and understanding factors that contribute to antifouling of biological molecules of interest as well as immobilization of large biopolymers
Ability to make precision electronic measurements in the nA range
Expertise with metrology tools and characterization techniques such as TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS, ToF-SIMS, FTIR, ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, etc.
Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes
Ability to independently design experiments and interpret complex data sets
Fantastic work ethic with a can-do, no fear of trying new things and making mistakes attitude
Willingness and ability to fabricate prototype devices in university fabs
Analyzing complex experimental data using Python, Matlab, R, etc would be an asset

The base cash compensation for this California-based role is below. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for bonus, equity, and a generous benefits package. Final compensation amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location and may vary from the amount listed above. Compensation may be different in other locations. San Francisco Bay Area Pay Range $145,000 — $160,000 USD
