The ideal Senior Director of Data Engineering is passionate about data and overseeing a team of data engineers directly responsible for impacting the reliability and performance of our critical production data infrastructure and warehouse systems. This leader looks to continually learn, and enjoys sharing their expertise in support of the design and development of data pipelines and creation of reliable, scalable and maintainable data platform infrastructure.
You will report to our VP of Data Science and Business Intelligence located in our Bellevue, WA office, or you may work remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
You Will:
Oversee the design and delivery of data systems from requirements to production in modern technology stacks using technology like Airbyte/Snowplow, Airflow, and Snowflake. Operating in multiple cloud environments like AWS and GCP. Integrating via change data capture(CDC) with many different data sources from streaming activity logs to MySQL/Postgres, NoSQL datastores and external business systems
Articulate and drive an ambitious vision for our data and platform strategy to the executive/leadership levels
Partner with cross-functional leaders in Engineering, Marketing, Finance and Sales on initiatives that leverage the centralized data platform
Be Informed of latest developments in Cloud and Software Engineering practices and take steps to modernize and maintain our data stack securely and in a compliant fashion
Modernize the data stack, establish and Implement data quality guidelines, including catalogs & anomaly detection solution alerting and notification
Build relationships across the organization, especially with engineering, to coordinate build out for new data and machine learning stack
Build, manage and grow a high performing team through inclusive hiring, mentoring and coaching
Advise data engineers and technologists, as required by the target architectures, to align with business priorities and their continued mentoring and coaching and development
Collaborate with BI and BI Ops leaders to enable down-stream Tableau reporting, self-serve and machine-learning models
Define the standards of excellence for technical delivery on projects so that the team has a framework for success
Support other duties as needed
You Have:
Bachelor’s degree in STEM, Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Statistics preferred
12+ years of experience as a part of a data management/engineering team
8+ years of managing data and/or data engineers and software engineers
Experience with cloud-based data solutions (Amazon Web Services, Google, Azure, Snowflake and other streaming technologies)
Owned and created strategy for data and application platforms
Thorough understanding of Data Architecture, data Modeling, Data quality and lineage
Understanding of data integration processes: extraction, transformation and loading (ETL/ELT)
Understanding and past implementation of Data Governance processes
Experience working in an Agile development environment, or in a consulting capacity is a plus
Strong verbal and written communication, ability to communicate complex technology solutions to senior leadership, gain alignment, and drive progress

Smartsheet provides a reasonable range of compensation for roles that may be hired in different geographic areas we are licensed to operate our business from. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, level of professional, educational experience, skills, and specific candidate location. In addition, this role will be eligible for a market competitive bonus and RSU stock grant upon accepted offer. California & New York: $226,800 to $313,200 | All other US States: $210,000 to $290,000
