You will serve as a Subject Matter Expert in the area of Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) responsible for all facets of NDE technique development, NDE implementation, and NDE certification. You will report to the Principal Material Science Engineer responsible for Advanced Manufacturing, Materials & Process, and Specialty Engineering (AMMPS) Lab Management in Louisville, Colorado. You will work in concert with other organizations, primarily the Quality and Operations Organizations, to implement non-destructive inspection techniques for evaluating and certifying flight hardware. You will work across all Sierra Space sectors, which include Transportation, Destinations, and Applications. You will support NDE development and implementation at all Sierra Space geographic locations.Sierra Space—based in Louisville, CO with operations in Madison, WI, Durham, NC, Huntsville, AL, Houston, TX, and Kennedy Space Center, FL—designs and manufactures the Dream Chaser spaceplane and other advanced spacecraft, commercial space destinations, satellites, propulsion and environmental systems, spacecraft subsystems and components for the U.S. government (including NASA), commercial customers, and international organizations. Learn more about Sierra SpacePrimary Responsibilities:You will develop and maintain internal inspection specifications and processes You will develop internal techniques for NDE including but not limited to Digital Radiography (DR), Computed Radiography (CR), Eddy Current (EC), Ultrasonics (UT), and Fluorescent Liquid Penetrant (PT)Where internal techniques can not be developed to meet program needs, due to resource constraints, you will help identify and coordinate external inspection support, working closely with the Operations and Quality Organizations You will develop and maintain NDE standards used for technique certification You will provide design feedback as it relates to inspectability, most importantly for fracture critical parts You will perform inspections on development and flight hardware You will train and mentor inspectors from the Quality organization Additional Responsibilities:You will develop a multi-year NDE capability plan that serves the Sierra Space Enterprise and includes internal capability and external partners You will develop yearly capital expense request that build-up internal capability based on technical need, schedule benefit, and/or cost benefit You will develop an NDE lab in Colorado that is capable of inspecting a broad range of flight hardware, including but not limited to Thermal Protection ceramic tile, aerospace composite and sandwich structure, and metallic additively manufactured componentsMust-haves:Bachelor's of Science degree in a related discipline and typically 10 or more years of relevant experienceRelevant work experience may be considered in lieu of required educationThorough understanding of and experience with the practical application of Materials and Process requirementsProgressive experience with Material and Process (M&P) specification developmentExperience working in multi-disciplinary design & development teamsAbility to apply correct processes in order to evaluate the performance of materialsAbility to write test reports describing key inputs and outputs of material characterization testing along with supporting data analysisPreferred:Experience with designing for inspect-ability Experience with developing NDE techniques and qualifying detection capability (POD 90/95) ASNT SNT-TC-1A or NAS410 Level II minimum prior personnel qualification Experience with Penetrant, Ultrasonic, and Radiographic inspection methods Familiarity with Eddy Current and Computed Tomography inspection methods to aerospace standards Familiarity with ASTM, AMS, or other aerospace NDE method standards The ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance may be required Learn more about the background check process for Security ClearancesImportant Notice:To conform to U.S. Government international trade regulations, applicant must be a U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State or U.S. Department of Commerce. With 30+ years of proven spaceflight heritage, Sierra Space has provided more than 4,000 space systems, subsystems and components to customers worldwide, and participated in more than 500 missions to space, including to Mars.
