We are hiring a Senior Scientist to gather structural information for the characterization and optimization of novel gene editing tools as a leader of the Structural Biology team. Reporting to the Senior Director, Structural Biology, this position contributes to the determination of critical structural attributes conferring optimal enzyme performance, including the design and preparation of samples for protein structure experiments, the installation of mutations to increase desirable functions, and the miniaturization of complex multi-component systems while increasing specificity and efficiency.
You will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact as you partner with the Mammalian Cell Translation and Protein Engineering and Optimization teams to translate novel metagenomics-derived cellular machinery into safe and effective gene editing tools. This role will be based in Emeryville, California.
How you’ll contribute:
Lead structural biology investigations to understand protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions of novel and engineered systems
Contribute purified protein, cofactors, and substrates for structural and mechanistic studies
Lead the preparation of research planning documents and coordinate activities with academic collaborators and commercial research organizations to execute structural studies.
Contribute to the engineering of complex systems by identifying, installing, and testing novel protein variants.
Collaborate with the mammalian cell translation team to design and test protein fusion constructs for increased cell editing efficiency and specificity.
What you bring:
Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, or a related discipline
At least five years of relevant structural biology experience in postdoc and/or biotech industry
Advanced proficiency with the structural determination of novel proteins, especially those with multiple subunits, cofactors, or variants
Experience coupling primary structural models and experimental kinetic data to deconvolute enzymatic mechanism
Experience with designing constructs, expressing recombinant proteins in E. coli and mammalian cells, and purifying recalcitrant proteins from microbial extracts
Effective oral and written communication, prioritization, and organizational skills
Personality attributes:
Able to quickly learn and adapt to new software tools
Highly collaborative, solutions-oriented, and thrives in a fast-moving startup environment
