Research & Development Writing System EngineerDescription -BUSINESS ENVIRONMENTSPTS (Specialty Printing and Technology Solutions) is an exciting and dynamic organization focused on developing products and technologies for OEM partners that deliver winning products into the marketplace. The SPTS R&D lab develops technologies to support printhead, inks, writing systems, system enablement hardware and proto-typing hardware tools. SPTS develops ink and writing systems for various market segments including coding and marking industrial applications, mail addressing and postage. This area of focus is a growing market for the SPTS business. This writing system engineer opening is to support development of the next generation of coding and marking printhead and inks which will increase HP’s leadership position.JOB DESCRIPTIONSPTS Writing Systems Engineers are responsible for enabling new product introductions and/or technology development according to HP’s product development processes. Job responsibilities will include characterizing and developing system solutions to meet program requirements. It will require the optimal integration of a diverse set of sub-system technologies obtained from development partners (ink, printhead, firmware, and hardware).Position requires interaction with HP internal and external partners. Travel to partner printer divisions, external suppliers, off-shore HP sites, and conferences/trade-shows may be required. Responsibilities can include:Creating new or modified system designs according to program needs, carry out analysis and evaluation of those designs to ensure that fundamentals are fully understood, basic problems are solved, and that the design is sufficiently robust to continue to meet regulatory and HP quality standards.Establishing and/or maintaining platform-level agreement for image-quality, reliability, and/or durability program goals. Confirm direct correlation to market requirements (ensure program understands when it is effectively “done”). Highlight gaps and develop and recommend mitigation plans as needed.Algorithm development for system functionality which may include scripting, firmware/software development.Manage (organize/drive) image-quality, reliability, and/or durability-centric development and performance characterization activities in accordance with these goals. Confirm test infrastructure is in place to validate goals per engineering and marketing documentation. Guide focused team members to determine the right mix and priority of testing as it relates to overall program goals or associated performance impact/risk. Make plans visible to manager and together adjust and balance versus allocated budget.Strive for root cause understanding of ink formulation and pen design impact for image-quality, reliability, and/or durability-related performance. Actively provide feedback to formulation chemists and architecture designers. Document findings.
