We are seeking a creative and collaborative Scientist to join the Discovery division to optimize protein sequences and constructs to turn novel gene editing systems into therapeutic tools. This position will report to the Director, Protein Engineering and Optimization. It will contribute to lead system generation and optimization, including generating and screening libraries in mammalian and bacterial cells, constructing protein fusions containing novel components, and assaying and selecting improved variants. You will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact as you partner with the rest of the interdisciplinary Discovery team to build an industry-leading gene editing tool kit with a focus on CRISPR-associated transposases (CASTs) and other systems that can be leveraged for gene editing through precise, programmable integration of large DNA cargoes. This role will be based in Emeryville, California. How you’ll contribute:  Generate and screen variant libraries of metagenomics-derived proteins to identify high-performing systems Optimize complex systems through structure-driven rational protein engineering Collaborate with the mammalian cell translation team to design and test protein fusion constructs for increased cell editing efficiency and specificity Contribute to the screening for novel enzymes and constructs  Identify and implement new tools and methods utilizing expertise in protein engineering Communicate results and findings to wider teams and coordinate discovery projects with Novel Systems, Mammalian Cell Translation, Biochemistry/Biophysical, and other teams What you bring: Ph.D. in Protein Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline and relevant applied protein engineering research experience Expertise and knowledge of up-to-date methods and tools for optimizing proteins based on structure/function relationships Experience  high-throughput plasmid construction and expressing proteins in mammalian cells  Experience designing and performing  high-throughput selection screens in mammalian cells Effective oral and written communication, prioritization, and organizational skills The ability to quickly learn and adapt to new projects and tools,  A highly collaborative and solutions-oriented outlook, and you thrive in a fast-moving startup environment   California Pay Transparency Disclosure: This position is classified as an exempt position under the Federal Labor Standards Act.  The anticipated base salary range for this position will be $115,000 to $145,000 .  You will also be eligible to receive equity, bonuses, and a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits depending on the position offered.
