The Photon OS team is part of Cloud Infrastructure Business Group (CIBGR&D organisation is responsible for delivering the ground breaking Photon OS which forms a standard platform for vSphere, Core Virtualisation Infrastructure, Solutions for Enterprise Virtualisation and Cloud initiatives. The team focuses on cutting edge engineering and advanced projects around containers and operating systems engineering with a specific focus on security, performance and interoperability for Linux containers.What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?In this role you would be contributing towards building an operating system distribution that involves various sub processes distributed among various servers in the data center. Contributing towards various PhotonOS based images and containers. You will be part of a distributed team, comprised of superb software engineers and architects - experienced in building operating system distributionSuccess in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?You will be expected to:Independently contribute to PhotonOS operating system distribution both Kernel and Userspace developmentYou will work closely with the broader Linux community, contributing code upstream. You will work closely with customers to fix problems encountered in using PhotonOSYou will Work on distributed systems and containers on both X86 and ARM architectureDevelop tooling and provide guidance to facilitate to enhance automated CI/CD test pipelineWrite design proposals, participate in community meetings and mentor other contributors.What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?On a regular basis, you willDesign and implement features, triage, review and respond to incoming issues and pull requests, ensure high code quality and correctness through testing and factoring, and maintain documentation, release notes, etc.Participate in community discussions in the PhotonOS , github, slack, mailing lists and meetings.Collaborate in upstream and internal architecture planning and design meetings.Collaborate with internal teams to solve issues involving PhotonOSPublicly discuss relevant topics through presentations, blog posts, webinars, etc.Mentor, provide direction and guidance to junior engineers and new contributors to the project.Work in a distributed team across multiple geographical locations.What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?This position reports to the Director of engineering team, who is an experienced Management professional and a VMware veteran. The team is distributed across the globe with Bellevue, Washington State (United States), and Bengaluru, India being the major development hubs.
