Coherent Optical System EngineerMunich, Germany Infinera is seeking a coherent optical system engineer to join our Strategic and Innovation Team in Munich. The candidate will work on advanced research topics in cooperation – also as part of EU projects – with leading Content Service Providers (CSP) and renowned academic institutions in Europe and in the rest of the world. The workflow will be characterized by a mix of numerical analyses, techno-economic and experiments. The main topic of the research will include transmission performance, high data-rate coherent pluggable, data analytics, and wideband transmission, besides the identification of new applications of coherent pluggable optics. Furthermore, the candidate will contribute to develop concepts to further extend the company patent portfolio. The candidate should be prepared to work with early prototype of coherent modules and control systems for short- and long-term and their enabling technologies and related applications. Excellent communication skills will be needed in all interactions with customers and academic partners.Essential Functions / Key ResponsibilitiesInvestigate the network application of point-to-point (P2P) and point-to-multipoint (P2MP) coherent pluggables in customer networks. This includes the use of smart optical pluggables in scenarios like metro/access aggregation, 5G-fronthaul, PON overlay, etc. via transmission simulation and economic analyses. Improvement and development of novel solutions and concepts to enhance the performance of P2MP over customer networks. Experimental performance evaluation of P2P and P2MP coherent pluggable transceivers, in scenarios defined with customers. Joint work with customers and academic partners within EU-funded projects. Writing proposals for EU/national funding and supervision of PhD students. Promote the Infinera XR optics solution within scientific fora by publishing technical papers in high-impact journals and conferences such as IEEE / OPTICA OFC and ECOC. Contribute to discussions at the conferences through workshops and panels.Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:Deep understanding of optical communication systems and optical networking, digital signal processing, linear and nonlinear impairments, optical system design rules (e.g., OSNR calculation, power budget, etc.). Deep knowledge of digital communication is also required, and in particular the candidate must be familiar with topics such as digital subcarrier and probabilistic shaping.Fundamental understanding of coherent optical modules and components, including optical transceivers, tunable lasers, MZ modulators, photodetectors, transimpedance amplifiers, and EDFAs.Hands-on experience with high-speed optical and electrical test equipment and data acquisition with all types of network elements like ROADM, WSS, EDFA, DSP, and coherent transponders is desired.Knowledge on transmission modeling for physical layer aware optical networking and planning. Knowledge of the next generation of 5G/6G and existing IM-DD based access/metro networks will be a plus.Programming experience in Matlab, Python, Julia or similar for transmission analyses, economic of the explored solutions, and automation of instrument control and data acquisition.Highly detail-oriented, excellent analytical, and troubleshooting skills.A highly motivated team player for cross-functional interaction. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Previous experience of working on a collaborative project is a plus.Education / Experience:PhD in Optical Communications.#LI-GA1Infinera is an equal opportunity employer.
