Infinera is hiring an Optical Systems Design Engineer to work on advanced research topics in the Optical Architecture Group. This is a unique opportunity that will challenge You to contribute to a large-scale European research project in cooperation with leading service providers with a global footprint and renowned academic institutions, helping to shape the next generation of optical networks to efficiently sustain a myriad of feature-rich and immersive future applications.The candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team at Infinera and will be tasked with developing and implementing advanced network design and optimization models, investigate forward-looking technologies and architectures for metro-access and/or metro-core networks, perform numerical analysis and conduct detailed techno-economic evaluations. Moreover, fulfilling some of the tasks will demand working jointly with key partners in the consortium and representing Infinera at project meetings. The outcome of this work should also include publications in the principal journals and conferences in the field, as well as possible submissions of patent applications, strengthening Infinera’s position as an innovative provider of optical networking solutions.Primary Responsibilities: Execute and support comprehensive research work addressing key challenges of optical networking in the medium- to long-term, which can include, but are not restricted to, 5G and 6G-related requirements, highcapacity metro and core networks, low-cost and flexible metro-aggregation networks, coherent towards the edge, advanced network automation. Investigate new applications leveraging smart coherent pluggable transceivers capable of supporting pointto-multipoint connectivity in the optical domain, embedding relevant input from customers and project partners. Investigate solutions to cost-effectively realize the next-generation of high-capacity, power efficient and self-driving transport networks. Perform detailed transmission simulations and techno-economic analyses to validate the feasibility of the proposed solutions and compare them with state-of-the-art. Develop new design methodologies, control plane extensions and planning workflows adequate to the new architectures and/or applications envisioned. Participate in collaborative efforts to define research activities in detail always having in mind Infinera’s strategic interest and the successful project execution. Meet deadlines of project deliverables and milestones and ensure highest standards of quality in the work reported. Drive the submission of publications and patent applications.Summarize and disseminate relevant research progress and customer/competitor insights to Infinera’s product management and R&D. Support of future research project proposals and mentoring/supervising junior researchers.Required Knowledge and Skills: Proven expertise in optical communication systems and optical networking. Advanced understanding of physical impairments in optical fiber systems and hands-on experience in transmission modelling. Good understanding of the fundamentals of coherent high baud rate transmitter/receiver and digital signal processing. Good understanding of machine learning techniques and their potential applications in network design and operation. Expertise in optimization methods, namely integer linear programming (ILP), heuristic, and meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. Familiar with DWDM, OTN, Ethernet and IP/MPLS technologies. Familiar with network elements, optical switches, optical amplifiers and control plane. Proficient programming skills in Matlab, Python, Julia or C++. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Detail-oriented and having excellent analytical skills. Very good organization skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-site team.
