Infinera is seeking a Principal Optical System Engineer to join our Strategic and Innovation Team in Munich. The candidate will work on advanced research topics in cooperation with leading Content Service Providers (CSP) and renowned academic institutions in Europe and the rest of the world. The candidate will take a leading role in our participation in national and European research cooperations. This includes the following topics:Theoretical and numerical analysis of next generation coherent pluggable opticsStudy of economic factors impacting coherent pluggable opticsInvestigation of innovative solutions for pluggable optics and digital signal processingExperimental investigation of next generation optical network technologyPlanning of and participation in Proof-of-Concept demonstrations in partner labs or in the fieldParticipation in standardization work The ideal candidate should be prepared to work with early prototype coherent modules and control systems to further the development of short- and long-term enabling technologies and their related applications. Excellent communication skills will be needed in all interactions with customers and academic partners.Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities - Drive research and innovation on new applications of our technology within InfineraInvestigate network applications of point-to-point and point-to-multipoint (P2MP) pluggables in customer networks through simulations and economic analyses. This includes smart pluggables in scenarios like metro/access aggregation, 5G-fronthaul, PON overlay, etc. Improve and develop novel solutions and concepts to enhance the performance of P2MP over customer networks. Experimentally evaluate the performance of P2MP coherent pluggable transceivers, in scenarios defined with our customers, including field trials.- Take ownership and leadership for our participation in one or more European projectsWork jointly with customers and academic partners within EU-funded projects Prepare proposals for EU/national funding- Promote Infinera solutions within the scientific forums by publishing technical papers in high impact journals and conferences such as IEEE / OPTICA, OFC, and ECOC. Contribute to discussions at conferences through workshops and panels. - Represent Infinera in standardization bodies as a member of our standards team.Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Deep understanding of optical communication systems and optical networking, digital signal processing, linear and nonlinear impairments, optical system design rules, OSNR calculation, power budget. Deep knowledge of digital communication. In particular, the candidate must be familiar with topics such as digital subcarrier and probabilistic shaping;Fundamental understanding of coherent optical modules and components, including optical transceivers, tunable lasers, MZ modulators, modulator drivers, photodetectors, transimpedance amplifiers, and EDFAs;Hands-on experience with high-speed optical and electrical test equipment and data acquisition with all types of network elements like ROADM, WSS, EDFA, Raman amplifiers, DSP, and coherent transponders desired;Knowledge on transmission modeling for physical layer aware optical networking and planning. Knowledge of the next generation of 5G/6G and existing IM-DD based access/metro networks will be a plus;Programming experience in Matlab, Python, Julia or similar for transmission analyses, economic of the explored solutions, and automation of instrument control and data acquisition;Highly detail-oriented, excellent analytical, and troubleshooting skills;Strong experience in national and European funded research Long experience in publishing in high-impact journals and conferences;Detailed understanding of the challenges in the access network market and technologies, including ongoing standardization work;A highly motivated team player for cross-functional interaction.
