The Technical Fellow – Deployable Space Systems provides leadership in the concept, architecture, design, build, verification and validation, and operation of innovative complex deployable structures and systems. Recognized as a leader in the field:Subject matter expert for Advanced Programs mechanisms engineering efforts including Conceptual Development, Analysis, Thermal, Structures, Dynamics, and Mechanical Design for advanced Space Vehicle MechanismsDefines structural, mechanical, environmental design and integration requirements for both flight and non-flight (GSE) hardwareDevelops concepts of operation and ensures execution of requirements, drawings, analysis, testing, and subsystem integrationLeads design and manufacturing integration requirementsLeads the development of mechanical, unit, and vehicle qualification and acceptance test plansSupports system level trades to ensure the vehicle design meets all physical, mechanical and environmental requirements Develops technology insertions plans in support of future conceptsMust-haves:Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics or related discipline and typically 20+  or more years of relevant experience (Mechanical Engineering Preferred)Relevant work experience may substitute for required educationExpert knowledge of engineering principles and practices, simulation and modelling, and automationProgressive experience working in multi-disciplinary design and development teamsExpert in requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation; systems design, systems integration, technical risk identification and management strategies, and Verification and Validation (V&V) activitiesExpert organizational, documentation, and communication skills (written, verbal, and graphical).  Expert in briefing technical subjects to both technical and non-technical people and delivering key messages and insights from analysis productsSelf-motivated, innovative, and the ability to work with diverse teams developing game changing capabilitiesBreadth of experience in spaceflight and spacecraft systems, with depth in design, ground test, and flight operations of space mechanisms & deployment systems (Payload bay doors, solar arrays, radiators, robotic manipulator systems, antennas, sun shields, space lubricants, actuators, and locking mechanisms etc.)Understanding space environment interactions with space based deployment systemsPreferred:Demonstrated technical leadership role on multiple successful complex spacecraft deployment systems throughout the lifecycle (concept development, requirements definition, design, development, testing, and operations)Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experienceExpert models, simulations, and automation using software and software languages such as MATLAB, Simulink, Python, Femap, Systems Tool Kit (STK), or C++Experience with software tools such as DOORS, Cameo, Confluence, JIRA, and PLM suites such as Xcelerator, Envovia, and WindchillThe ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance may be required Learn more about the background check process for Security Clearances IMPORTANT NOTICE:To conform to U.S. Government international trade regulations, applicant must be a U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State or U.S. Department of Commerce.With 30+ years of proven spaceflight heritage, Sierra Space has provided more than 4,000 space systems, subsystems and components to customers worldwide, and participated in more than 500 missions to space, including to Mars.
