Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.  Summary The Staff Battery Controls Systems Engineer position will lead the high voltage battery's control system architectural definition and design by balancing safety and durability with pack and vehicle performance.  This position will work cross-functionally to execute this responsibility, including the battery cell, thermal, design, software, and hardware teams, along with vehicle controls teams.  This leadership spans from project kickoff, definition, implementation, validation, and delivery to production. Responsibilities Lead electrical and control system architecture of the HV Energy Storage System (ESS) Lead delivery of HV battery controls system engineering deliverables: Responsible for decomposition of battery control systems architectural design and derivation of sub-system requirements & verification test definition Lead the platform team responsible for battery product architecture development including fusing, HV switchgear, HV Electrical Safety, and overcurrent protection. Lead the platform team development of functional safety-specific features and functions Lead the platform team in aligning battery control system algorithm features with the specific needs of the program Lead the platform team in development of standards for verification and validations of battery control systems in collaboration with BMS SW, and Test and Validation Teams Communicate and drive cross functional development of control requirements Consolidate and manage the battery control system requirements, architectures, and technology Work in conjunction with subject matter experts (SMEs) to support and drive program team execution: Interface with battery systems SMEs to support requirements development and issue resolution. Tailor and align electrical and control systems technology and requirements for use across different battery platforms. Quickly transition to a variety of engineering discipline work, from high-level cross sub-system projects to specific component focus, depending on need of the team and stage of development/ production Responsible for creation of end of line requirements that validate the Battery System design in a production setting Work with engineers across multiple disciplines to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks: Must be able to adapt and work within dynamic development timelines Detailed understanding of software interaction between the battery management system & the rest of vehicle; familiar with battery measurement and controls architecture Previous experience with cross functional FTA, DFMEA and management of design review and release processes. Qualifications 7+ years of work experience in Battery/Automotive/Aerospace/related industries At least a bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline Knowledge of battery behavior and High Voltage Safety Knowledge of battery sensing technology and battery management architectural design Creating the requirements from the ground up, using engineering analysis Excellent problem-solving skills; reliant on core engineering principles and common sense Equal Opportunity Rivian is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local fair employment practices laws.
