Retool is forming its design systems team responsible for managing the core UI components and their use in developing Retool’s products and features. This presents a significant opportunity for individuals to shape and influence the software development process at Retool. Specifically, the company is seeking engineers with technical leadership experience in design systems to bring their expertise to the team.
As a member of this team, your role would involve driving systematic improvements in code quality across Retool’s codebase, increasing accessibility for users with assistive technologies, and supporting a comprehensive visual refresh of Retool. Additionally, you would collaborate with multiple teams to create high-quality interfaces, and focus on enhancing engineering efficiency in product development at Retool. Your work would entail close coordination with the design team, product managers, and other engineering leaders working on design systems.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
We’re a tool built by engineers for engineers. You will work on features that impact thousands of customers globally and have the ability to change how applications are built across all parts of the stack. You’ll meet with internal counterparts to enhance customer thinking and partner closely with product on building out features. You’ll have a large impact on new features or improve performance on thousands of customers' applications.
Retool is built primarily in JavaScript and TypeScript, Node.js on the backend, and React on the frontend. We’ll look to you to bring your experience to build within this environment and impact our codebase. You’ll also engage in technical decision-making with the team, participate in planning, and help our engineering team expand its skillset. To that end, you’ll also play a key role in helping us grow the team through interviewing potential new team members.
IN THIS ROLE YOU'LL
Elevate the skills of fellow engineers through mentoring
Increase the overall efficiency and dev speed of Retool’s internal teams through leveraging the design system
Drive widespread adoption, utilization, and satisfaction with our internal design system
Collaborate across teams, including design, product management, and engineering, to achieve shared goals
Continuously improve the tools and workflows that support web development, enhancing the developer experience
Create and document reusable components to bring a high degree of craft to Retool’s UI
Take part in creating the team’s roadmap, balancing new projects with leveraged improvements (both addressing technical debt and user facing improvements)
Drive a visual refresh across Retool’s products
THE SKILLSET YOU'LL BRING
Proven track record as a technical leader in the design systems field, driving technical excellence, sharing best practices across teams, and guiding the team towards the most impactful initiatives
Strong commitment to visual design quality, and eager to assist others in elevating their visual and interaction design skills
Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in delivering features or products as a full-stack developer, and/or serving in a tech lead role
Demonstrated expertise in Typescript/Javascript, React, and CSS
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Interest in mentoring others, learning from peers, and embracing new challenges
