POSITION SUMMARY
This upper-level role will support our vivarium program, oversee vivarium managers and associates, and help expand our program in both size and scope. This employee is responsible for planning vivarium activities and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. In addition, they will propose and implement new opportunities to improve our workflow with the main overarching goal of balancing scientific innovation and animal welfare.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead a high performing team with a strong focus on collaboration and communication
1:1 management of Managers, Research Associates, Technologists, and Technicians
Conduct monthly meetings with indirect reports
Conduct hiring and reassignments to satisfy departmental needs
Manage mouse colony to ensure company goals are met while reducing waste
Lead departmental meetings and participate in company meetings
Develop SOPs with a focus on process optimization, AAALAC compliance, and biocontainment for use in Animal Care and Use Program handbook
Prepare program for AAALAC accreditation via personnel management and documentation
Ensure compliance with OLAW, IACUC, AWA, AVMA, and AAALAC standards
Fill-in for other departmental roles as needed
Support operational budget planning and purchase of CAPEX equipment
Analyze and present departmental data at company and industry meetings
Interface with laboratory, operations, and management staff
Perform euthanasia techniques per AVMA guidelines (primary method: CO 2 )
Follow Institutional, local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure proper animal care, health, and welfare
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
8+ years of lab animal experience
Personnel management experience required
Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, or related field required
Experience in an AAALAC accredited facility preferred
Proficiency in verbal and written English required
AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level (LATg) preferred; must sit for exam within 12 months of employment
AALAS certification of Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Lift 40lbs
Walk and stand for several hours per day
Perform repetitive motions (bend, squat, kneel, twist, reach above shoulder height, bottle capping, push/pull)
Perform quick, simple grasping motion with both hands for several hours per day
