Engineering Lab Manager
PURPOSE
Based out of Rocket Lab's site Sinclair Interplanetary in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Engineering Lab Manager report to the VP Operations and is responsible for managing all aspects of an engineering laboratory dedicated to the design and production of spacecraft components (reaction wheels and star trackers). The engineering lab includes facilities, processes and activities related to electrical, mechanical, and optical production and research.
WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO:
Manage inventory of lab consumables and supplies, and procure as required.
Manage day-to-day engineering lab operations including lab safety protocols and organization.
Ensure adherence to safety and regulatory requirements to maintain compliance with lab certifications, permits, and local requirements.
Collaborate with production manager and manufacturing engineer to design and organize lab layout for optimum performance.
Manage lab assets including storing specialized development hardware, maintaining instrument calibrations, servicing laboratory equipment, and developing and maintaining an equipment and asset database.
Develop and execute preventative maintenance plan to manage all building systems including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, safety, and waste management.
Manage all Health and Safety onboarding and training of staff in laboratory and building processes, including emergency management response and use of specialized equipment.
Collaborate with engineers on new equipment designs, selections, installations, and operations.
Analyze and effectively communicate lab related issues, ideas, and recommendations.
Plan, schedule, and coordinate new lab locations and spaces.
Work with cross-functional teams and external vendors on equipment and service-related needs.
Liaise with key stakeholders, including parent company teams, external contractors and the building maintenance team.
YOU’LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 4+ years of relevant work experience within a lab environment.
College degree or it’s equivalent in a technical or vocational training is preferred.
Demonstrable understanding of and experience with infrastructure and facilities management including laboratory refurbishments, major building projects, and managing building infrastructure
THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:
Experience procuring and maintaining inventory of parts, tools, and laboratory consumables.
Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical lab equipment: multi-meter, power supplies, solder pot, soldering iron, thermal chambers, and more.
Comfortable with working in a fast-paced, dynamic, and changing work environment.
Meticulous organizational skills.
Exceptional written communication, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems
Occupational Health and Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH)
Facility Management and Project Management qualification
