The opportunity
The Director, Data Intelligence is responsible for building and leading a team of business intelligence and data engineers, data scientists and business analysts responsible for enabling the SMB and OCS organizations to leverage data to understand the performance and challenge of their businesses. The team is responsible for converting data into actionable business insights as well as setting up the data infrastructure to build and power optimization models to achieve the organization's goals. They are analysis experts who leverage a variety of data platforms and analytical tools to provide timely, meaningful, and consumable information. They build deep contextual and domain knowledge. They ensure data quality and build scalable tools. They communicate findings with the most effective and influential methods.
You will:
Build and lead the team on the design, implementation, and delivery of data solutions in a highly ambiguous and significantly complex problem space that have a long-term impact on a business, organization, or technology. Your efforts may produce new solutions or refactor, or even deprecate, existing solutions.
You heavily influence the design and deliver a significant portion of critical-path code and/or analysis. You make the right trade-offs.
Your solutions are as simple as possible. You only advocate for new data solutions when it is necessary.
Identify and tackle intrinsically hard problems. (e.g., highly complex, ambiguous, undefined, with less existing structure, or having significant business risk or potential for significant impact).
Be a pragmatic problem solver, applying judgment and experience to balance trade-offs between competing interests. You will be flexible, adapting your approach to meet the needs of the team, the customers, and the project or product.
Lead and actively participate in design reviews, aligning teams across your organization towards coherent analytics strategies. You bring clarity to complexity, probe assumptions, illuminate pitfalls, and foster shared understanding.
Participate in the hiring/interview process and may actively recruit for Flexport.
Play a significant role in the career development of others, actively mentoring and educating the larger data community on trends, technologies, and best practices.
Keep abreast of industry trends. You effectively research and benchmark our solutions against other analytics platforms in the industry.
You should have:
Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
7+ years of experience in managing successful teams
12+ years industry experience building successful production science systems
Experience with machine learning technologies, information retrieval or related applications
Experience communicating with executives and non-technical leaders
Strong Computer Science fundamentals in data structures, algorithm design, and statistics

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range displayed, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and / or training.
The US base salary range for this full-time position: (exclusive of bonus, equity and benefits.) $242,413 — $296,283 USD
