Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.  ROLE SUMMARY: This is a multi-disciplinary role with a high impact and cross-functional interactions across the organization (design, process, manufacturing, quality, service, failure analysis, and others). With ownership of frequent hands-on tests at internal lab spaces and some external vendors. The opening is located at our Irvine, CA facility and reports directly to the Manager of Battery Test Engineering. RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform tests to validate mechanical components within EV battery packs to be used for vehicle platforms Perform methods to diagnose and characterize mechanical behaviors in uni-axial loading in tension or compression Specify and/or operate equipment and instruments for various mechanical and durability tests Collaborate with design engineers, materials engineers, and CAE to determine appropriate methods for measurement, detection, and presentation of pass/fail criteria Develop, maintain, and enhance technical memory documents, standard operating procedures, templates, and detailed test outcome reports Support design reviews for Product Development & Change Management, Key Stakeholder Reviews, Component Technical Reviews and Supplier Technical Reviews Provide feedback related to battery failure modes discovered in testing to Development/Validation Engineering and Design Engineering teams Design and modify fixtures and instrumentation for battery coupon testing to achieve remarkably consistent sample-to-sample dimensions and overall quality QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science in material science/engineering, mechanical, chemical, electrical engineering, nanoengineering or closely related subject 3+ years automotive experience in related relevant field preferred Familiarity with test methods for tensile testing of plastics and adhesive joints (ASTM D1002, ASTM D3166, ASTM D7791, ISO 527, ISO 4587) Knowledge of lab equipment including uni-axial dynamic and static tensile test systems, strain gauges, load cells, thermal chambers, CAD & machine shop tools for sample fabrication, etc. Demonstrated knowledge of high-voltage systems, battery pack, module and cell design; mechanics of materials knowledge preferred Demonstrated knowledge of automated battery test equipment and test methods preferred Experience with configuring devices with mechanical measurement instruments, including but not limited to accelerometers, strain gauges, displacement measurement transducers, force transducers, etc. Familiarity with statistical tools, DOEs and packages such as JMP / Minitab; DFSS or DRM tools (such as VOC, FMEA, 5-Why, 8-D) Salary Range/Hourly Rate for California Based Applicants: [$121,000-$139,000] (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
