Back to jobs New Director, Data Engineering New York, NY Apply Vimeo is seeking a Director of Data Engineering to lead our data strategy, architecture, and automation efforts. This role will drive the development of a modern, scalable lakehouse architecture with Databricks on Google Cloud Platform. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in full-stack data engineering, automation, and governance, with a tech-agnostic approach that ensures Vimeo’s data infrastructure remains scalable, cost-effective, and future-proof. They will also oversee production automation engineering and reliability for data workflows, ensuring high availability, performance, and compliance. This is a high-impact, strategic leadership role, requiring a mix of technical depth, architectural vision, and people leadership to build a cutting-edge data ecosystem at Vimeo.
What you'll do:
Drive and lead strategic, cross-functional initiatives in order to enable data standardization, increase data consumption and boost data-driven decision making.
Communicate findings and insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Build and maintain user-friendly and informative dashboards, reports, and presentations in order to enable day-to-day and strategic data-driven decision making.
Perform advanced analytical deep dives to help stakeholders drill down into why they see certain outcomes.
Foster a relationship of trust and cooperation with the stakeholders, creating an atmosphere of knowledge sharing and collaboration.
Data Architecture & Engineering
Design and implement Vimeo’s lakehouse architecture, leading an enterprise migration from Snowflake to Databricks
Build and scale data processing pipelines (batch and real-time) using Apache Spark, SQL engines, Airflow, and cloud-native services.
Drive data modeling and optimization strategies to ensure high-performance analytics, machine learning, and product insights.
Ensure seamless integration between storage, compute, and analytics layers, supporting both structured and unstructured data.
Production Automation & Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
Lead automation-first initiatives for data ingestion, transformation, and governance using CI/CD, dbt, Airflow, and Terraform.
Establish observability, monitoring, and fault-tolerance frameworks to ensure high uptime and performance across data workflows.
Optimize cost efficiency and scalability of compute-intensive workloads by leveraging auto-scaling, caching, and federated query optimizations.
Implement SRE best practices to automate incident detection, resolution, and continuous improvement in data operations.
Governance, Security & Compliance
Define and enforce data governance best practices, ensuring compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and internal security policies.
Implement enterprise-grade access control frameworks using Databricks Unity Catalog and Atlan
Oversee metadata management, data lineage tracking, and cataloging to improve data discoverability and trust.
Leadership & Collaboration
Build and mentor a high-performing team of data engineers
Partner with Analytics, Product, Engineering, and AI/ML teams to enable data-driven decision-making and innovation.
Champion a data-first culture, promoting self-service analytics and democratized access to insights.
Technical Expertise
8+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics, or data architecture, with 3+ years in a leadership role.
Deep expertise in modern cloud data platforms, ideally Google Cloud
Strong background in full-stack data engineering, including orchestration (Airflow, dbt), streaming (Kafka, Flink), and distributed computing.
Experience in automating data workflows, optimizing query performance, and implementing observability frameworks.
Hands-on experience with data catalogs, metadata management, and governance frameworks.
Leadership & Strategic Thinking
Ability to set and execute a long-term vision for data infrastructure, automation, and reliability.
Experience building and scaling high-performing teams across data engineering, analytics, and governance.
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical and business stakeholders.
Base Salary Range:
NYC Metro, Bay Area, Seattle, & Los Angeles: $192,000 - $ 264,750
All other US cities outside above metro areas: $ 172,800 - $ 238,275
