The role will provide System Thermal engineering expertise spanning multiple phases of product development and product launch. The role will collaborate with many Illumina teams including development, systems integration, software, manufacturing, customer support, and quality. The role will partner with suppliers to manage external development and manufacturing activities. The engineer needs to be a self-starter and self-learner, analytically oriented, and able to identify/deliver results in a dynamic team environment with challenging timelines. Responsibilities: Support module design transfer (into manufacturing) of innovative, robust, and low cost System Thermal designs within Illumina’s instrumentation portfolioSupport the System Thermal design team via participation in design reviews, DFx, FMEA, modeling, and tolerance budgetingPartner with world-wide Contract Manufacturer & Original Design Manufacturer (CM/ODM) partners throughout the new product transfer and early production phase to achieve manufacturing readiness. This includes in-depth operational readiness assessments and active support of partner in achieving readinessSupport development of supplier manufacturing processes and testing to maximize capacity and yield of assemblies and subassemblies delivered to IlluminaSupport development of incoming, in-line, and end-of-line sub-assembly/instrument tests to ensure System Thermal performance targets are metSupport prototype, pilot, manufacturing, and products in the field by working cross functionally with consumables, hardware, software, and systems integration teams to conduct system level troubleshooting, testing, and analysisParticipate in CPM (critical parameter management) analysis to relate System Thermal specifications to sequencing performance, while considering system level interactions with chemistry & hardwareSupport protocol generation and execution for validating our Thermal Systems and manufacturing processesDesign and execute experiments to confirm models and further characterize our instrumentsInterface with PLM to create and maintain bill of materials and documentation to enable successful build of prototype, pilot, and production hardware Requirements: Technical competency and experience in thermal systems, NPI, and mechanical engineering.Demonstrated ability to succeed in a team environment on multiple concurrent projects in a complex, dynamic, sometimes ambiguous environmentDemonstrated ability to concept and implement measurement systems, test fixtures, and metrology tools.Familiarity with the process of establishing and confirming spec levels for high-yield manufacturingExperience interfacing with suppliers/partners to manage deliverables and support issue resolutionExperience in low to medium volume product NPI and product lifecycle system Experience with technical component documentation such as spec sheets and 2D CAD drawings required, experience with GD&T strongly preferredInternational and domestic travel of up to 20% Experience/Education: Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a BS or MS; or a PhD with a minimum of 6 years experience; or equivalent experienceThe estimated base salary range for the Sr Staff Mechanical Engineer role based in the United States of America is: $138,800 - $208,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
