We are looking for a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our team of Hardware, Instrument Software, Automation, and Systems engineers to support the growth of Twist Bioscience Synbio and NGS products.
In this Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer role as an individual contributor, you will directly contribute to the development of custom and off-the-shelf systems deployed in the Synbio and NGS production lines and have ownership over the design control functions to maintain accurate design history and follow regulatory and ISO 13485 requirements. There is an opportunity for growth into a management role for the motivated individual as the group grows.
What You’ll Be Doing
Directly contribute to the analysis, design, fabrication, and assembly of custom systems and off-the-shelf systems for Twist production environments
Support design and fabricate hardware for feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs
Utilize design control process to maintain accurate design history and follow regulatory and ISO 13485 requirements
Identifies and works with vendors to design and procure specialized components
Works with contractors and outside integrators to produce Twist hardware and instrumentation
Work effectively with the Hardware, Instrument Software, Automation, and Systems engineers to develop hardware in a team environment
Capable of balancing the scope of a project (users, purpose, longevity, etc) with the cost, design, and sustainability of the hardware/system being asked to create
What You’ll Bring to the Team
B.S., Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering or similar engineering background
Minimum of 12 years of industry experience,
Project management and design experience
Successful track record of delivering development goals on time and on budget
Hands-on skills to assemble, test, and validate equipment
Skilled in Solidworks CAD design
Understanding of tolerancing and machine shop processes
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with use of PDM for design collaboration and version control
Cross-functional skills in fluid mechanics, optics, and electronics are desirable
Experience and understanding of robotics and automation
Design and bring up of complex instrumentation systems
Design of Twist Bioscience hardware such as sequencers, synthesizers, and laboratory automation robotics
Experience with fluidic systems, including delivery and supply of toxic and flammable chemicals
Basic machine shop fabrication skills and abilities

The base cash compensation for this California-based role is below. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for bonus, equity, and a generous benefits package. Final compensation amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location and may vary from the amount listed above. Compensation may be different in other locations. San Francisco Bay Area Pay Range $180,500 — $197,500 USD
