Our team is entrusted with creating and using eBay’s Product Knowledge – a vast Big Data system which is built up of listings, transactions, products, knowledge graphs, and more. Our team has a mix of highly proficient people from multiple fields such as Machine Learning, Data Science, Software Engineering, Operations, and Big Data Analytics. We have a strong culture of collaboration, and plenty of opportunity to learn, make an impact, and grow!What Will You Do?​We are looking for a seasoned Manager of Applied Research to join us and help lead improvements, automation, and scaling of our data-heavy processes. Our Research team tackles such diverse and challenging projects as Image Quality scoring; Automatic Taxonomy Improvement; Entity Resolution of rich, hierarchical Entities; and Conflict Resolution between different representations of the same Entity. Further, the members help us design these separate projects and envision how they come together to create and power new experiences that surprise and delight our Customers. Being on the team, you can expect to benefit from:A competitive salary - including stock grants and a yearly bonusA healthy work culture that promotes business impact and at the same time highly values your personal well-beingBeing part of a force for good in this world - eBay truly cares about its employees, its customers, and the world’s population, and takes every opportunity to make this clearly apparent​​Job Responsibilities:Lead a team of around 10 Applied ResearchersCollaborate with Upper Management and Product Management on shaping the department’s vision and roadmapHelp define and refine project scopes, goals, metrics, and timelinesHelp and empower the team to seek and find scientifically valid solutions that deliver real value to eBay customersEnsure careful measurement of the team’s output and impact in order to learn and improve over timeMaintain and improve high standards in Scientific enquiry, Engineering quality, and reporting fidelity and accessibility in the teamFacilitate collaboration with Operations team to ensure the quality of any human-labeled data requiredMaintain up-to-date knowledge of the Data Science and Machine Learning world – and ensure the team members keep up with the pace as wellMentor your team members, as well as review their work and provide frequent feedback and advicePresent key technical and novel research work in public forums and conferencesDrive collaboration with the academic world, including through hiring and providing mentorship for interns Minimum Qualifications:​M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent field​5+ years (with Ph.D.) or 7+ years (with M.Sc.) of industrial experience in Applied Machine LearningExperience leading a Research or Engineering team in an industrial capacityExperience in mentoring Researchers in an academic capacity​Industrial experience with multiple of the following: classification, regression, NLP, clustering, Deep Learning / Neural Networks, Reinforcement Learning, or relatedSignificant Experience in Production-grade coding in a high-level language such as Python or Java​Experience in Big Data processing frameworks, e.g. Hadoop, SQL, Spark​5 or more related publications in quality conferences or journals​Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skillsThought leadership and teaching skillsPlease see the Talent Privacy Notice for information regarding how eBay handles your personal data collected when you use the eBay Careers website or apply for a job with eBay.eBay is an equal opportunity employer.
