Doctoral Candidate (DC) position in Horizon Europe MSCA project NESTOR "Next generation high-speed optical networks for metro access" Coriant R&D GmbH (Infinera) is looking for an excellent intern professional with a master’s degree in electrical engineering, or computer science, or physics to join our growing Strategic Architecture Engineering Team in Munich as a PhD student. The PhD program is part of the Doctoral Network NESTOR funded by the European Commission and it will be carried out at Infinera in Munich. As part of the training, the student will also take a secondment at VPI Photonics in Berlin. The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, will award the PhD. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions NESTOR includes the following partners: Infinera Portugal (coordinator), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Universitat Politecnica De Catalunya (Spain), Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento Sant’Anna (Italy), Orange (France), British Telecommunications (UK), Sm Optics (Italy), VPI photonics (Germany), Instituto Universitário De Lisboa (Portugal), Ericsson Telecomunicazioni (Italy), and Aston University (UK). The topic of the PhD program will be on “Low-complexity DSP techniques for metro-access networks”. The candidate will work on simplified digital signal processing (DSP) techniques with the aim to improve both the system level performance and the energy efficiency of the processing stages. The algorithms will be tailored to be used in network scenarios such as beyond 5G / 6G for x-haul and metro-aggregation networks, where the co-existence between next generation coherent transceivers with legacy IM-DD channels will be mandatory. The main objectives of the PhD program will be: Characterization of the use cases in terms of physical layer and traffic scenarios, components, fibre infrastructure (including linear and nonlinear fibre propagation) to craft and simplify DSP algorithms. Front-haul functional splits on the DSP tasks will be considered as well; Investigation of digital signal processing algorithms – including nonlinear compensation techniques – to reduce the impact of distortions. Investigation of simplification strategies to reduce complexity, and consequently the power consumption, of the DSP algorithms; Test the developed algorithms in lab experiments. The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Pablo Torres-Ferrera (Infinera), Dr. Antonio Napoli (Infinera), and Prof. Josep Prat (UPC). Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities Investigate the performance of the newly developed DSP algorithms when considering transmission with coherent point-to-point & point-to-multipoint digital subcarrier multiplexing based transceivers for metro/access aggregation-like scenarios. Explore novel supporting topics to enhance the performance of transceivers for next generation optical networks. Collaborate with other colleague, team members and external researchers from academic and industry. Write and present internal and public reports such as deliverable and milestones. Write and present technical papers internally and in high-impact journals and conferences from IEEE and OPTICA. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Deep understanding of (i) digital communications, (ii) digital signal processing and (iii) optical telecommunications systems. Knowledge on digital subcarrier multiplexing is desirable. Fundamental understanding of the most relevant components and devices present in an optical communication system (transceivers, fibre propagation, EDFAs, etc.). Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to clearly convey the information regarding the investigation procedure and result analysis in detail. Programming experience in Matlab, Python, Julia, C++, or similar. The candidate must be able to develop his/her own numerical tools to carry out the necessary transmission analyses. Highly attentive to detail, motivated, and possessing troubleshooting skills. Education / Experience: Master in electrical engineering / computer science / physics B2-C1 English Level. A certificate would be desirable, e.g., TOEFL test results. Eligibility criteria for this Horizon Europe MSCA programme: Applicants must be doctoral candidates and not have been awarded a doctoral degree. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree are not considered eligible. Researchers may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the first day of NESTOR employment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account. List of documents: CV Two or more references that we can contact. If available, previous employments or leadership qualifications and positions of trust. Personal letter (1 - 3 pages max) where you introduce yourself; describe your previous experience of relevance for the position (e.g., education, thesis work and, if applicable, any other research activities); describe your future goals and future research focus Copies of bachelor and/or master’s thesis. Attested copies and transcripts of completed education, grades and other certificates, e.g., TOEFL test results. Salary: In accordance with MSCA allowances Infinera is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Infinera complies with all applicable state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment.
