Doctoral Candidate (DC) position in Horizon Europe MSCA project NESTOR "Next generation high-speed optical networks for metro access" Infinera is looking for an excellent intern professional with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, or Physics to join our growing Strategic Architecture Engineering Team in Munich as a PhD student.  The PhD program is part of the Doctoral Network NESTOR project funded by the European Commission and will be carried out at Infinera in Munich. As part of the training, the student will take two secondments: one at VPI Photonics (Berlin) and one at Orange (Lannion). The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, will award the PhD. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions NESTOR includes the following partners: Infinera Portugal (coordinator), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Universitat Politecnica De Catalunya (Spain), Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento Sant’Anna (Italy), Orange (France), British Telecommunications (UK), Sm Optics (Italy), VPI photonics (Germany), Instituto Universitário De Lisboa (Portugal), Ericsson Telecomunicazioni (Italy), and Aston University (UK). The topic of the PhD program will be on “Network modelling for access and metro networks”. The candidate will work on the optimization and simplification next-generation optical networks, using state-of-the-art point-to-multipoint pluggable transceivers to propose cost-effective and practical solutions. The optimization of the various network scenarios will be achieved and assessed both in terms of Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and Operational Expenses (OpEx). The main objectives of the PhD program will be:  Redesign and simplification of complex optical network topologies with smart pluggable transceivers and physical layer knowledge.  Minimization of the number of required network elements, e.g., routers and transceivers, and devices with smart pluggable.  Exploitation of the available information within the coherent transceiver to monitor and improve the network performance. Assessment of the green impact obtained by the reduction or optimized selection of network elements in future metro aggregation networks. Within the framework of this program, the candidate will work at the site of Infinera in Munich, except during the two aforementioned secondments. The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Mohammad Hosseini (Infinera), Dr. Antonio Napoli (Infinera), and Prof. Luis Velasco (UPC). Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities  Investigate techno-economic aspects when considering coherent point-to-point versus point-to-multipoint digital subcarrier multiplexing based transceivers in the aforementioned optical networks scenarios. Explore novel architectures to extend the range of application of coherent point-to-multipoint transceivers and validate the physical layer performance of smart pluggable transceivers for next generation optical networks.  Collaborate with other colleague, team members and external researchers from academic and industry Write and present internal and public reports such as deliverable and milestones. Write and present technical papers internally and in high-impact journals and conferences from IEEE and OPTICA.  Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:  Deep understanding of numerical optimization techniques (such as meta-heuristics and integer linear programming) and Machine Learning techniques. Fundamental understanding of the most relevant components and devices present in optical communication systems such as DWDM systems (optical transceivers and amplifiers) Deep understanding of digital communications and telecommunications systems (modulation techniques, link budget modelling, coherent systems, information theory, channel modelling, etc.). Knowledge of digital signal processing, digital subcarrier multiplexing are desired. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to clearly convey the information regarding the investigation procedure and result analysis in detail.  Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Julia, C++ languages. The candidate must be able to develop his/her own numerical tools to carry out the necessary optimization, and transmission modelling and analyses. Highly attentive to detail, motivated to gain new knowledge, willing to collaborate within the scope of the project, and possessing troubleshooting skills.  Education / Experience:  Master in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science / Physics B2-C1 English Level. A certificate would be desirable, e.g., TOEFL test results. Eligibility criteria for this Horizon Europe MSCA programme: Applicants must be doctoral candidates and not have been awarded a doctoral degree. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree are not considered eligible. Researchers may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the first day of NESTOR employment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account. List of documents: CV Two or more references that we can contact. If available, previous employments or leadership qualifications and positions of trust. Personal letter (1 - 3 pages max) where you introduce yourself; describe your previous experience of relevance for the position (e.g., education, thesis work and, if applicable, any other research activities); describe your future goals and future research focus Copies of bachelor and/or master’s thesis. Attested copies and transcripts of completed education, grades and other certificates, e.g., TOEFL test results. Salary:  In accordance with MSCA allowances Infinera is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
