The Intern will be responsible for assisting the Technology Development ELX department in the Netherlands in a wide variety of initiatives and projects in support of the department’s projects. In this role, you will gain exposure to a fast-paced manufacturing and engineering environment which includes developing a detailed understanding of Plug Power’s products. The role will focus on the successful completion of technical projects, process improvement, documentation, and presentation of results at the end of the program.Project Summary The Technology Development ELX department in the Netherlands develops technologies that improve the safety and operability of ELX systems while reducing their CAPEX. Measuring Hydrogen concentrations in oxygen and air is key to monitoring the safety of ELX systems. A number of methods are available, but each has their drawbacks, like for example response delay, frequent calibration, drift, sensitive to moisture, complex sample systems and cost.In this intern project, which will be part of the larger Maelstrom project, we will test a, for our industry, new sensor that can measure fast (milliseconds) and is based purely on physical properties of gases. The signal coming from this sensor should be translated to an accurate hydrogen concentration. The intern will assist in developing such a translation model.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesReview literature on mathematical models for translating the sensor signal to an accurate hydrogen concentration.Experimentally check the translation model with hydrogen, water vapor and nitrogen mixtures.Validate model by comparing actual data form the conventional hydrogen sensor and the new sensor in the Maelstrom unit.Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of all Plug Power productsWork with senior level engineers and management to interpret and analyze dataAssist in developing engineering processes with guidance from senior level engineers and managementMechanical aptitude and ability to sufficiently make minor repairs as necessaryAbility to independently set up experiments and monitor progressUnderstand engineering concepts and how to appropriately apply them in day to day projectsAbility to critically analyze data in terms of system performance and reliabilityRepresent Plug Power in a professional manner at all times and in all interactionsPerform all other duties as assignedEducation and QualificationPreferably a chemical engineering or physics student with a strong affinity for mathematical modeling.  Pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or a related programPrior Internship or Co-op experience preferredMust have reliable transportation to the officeExcellent written and verbal communication skillsBackground/experience with statistical analysisPossess solid hands-on approach to problem-solvingComputer and software systems skills as applicable to position including but not limited to: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OutlookAbility to manage complex projects and multi-task effectivelyDemonstrated analytical abilities with strong attention to detailExcellent follow-through Must be driven and self-motivatedMust possess the highest ethical standards and a commitment to work quality
