Summary Posted: Dec 7, 2023 Role Number: 200526463 Do you thrive on pushing the limits of what’s considered feasible? As part of our Battery Engineering group, you’ll help craft creative battery solutions that deliver more energy in smaller spaces than ever before! You’ll work across fields to transform improved hardware elements into a single, integrated design. Join us and help us innovate new battery technologies that continually outperform the previous iterations! By collaborating with other product development groups across Apple, you’ll push the industry boundaries of what batteries can do and improve the product experience for our customers across the world. We are looking for a candidate to analyze materials properties using various characterization techniques and communicate results to the team. You will support mechanical characterization of energy storage materials and systems with materials characterization and mechanical testing techniques. Additionally, you will develop methods based on project needs for a comprehensive understanding of mechanisms. Including root causes for mechanical deformation and failure. Covering the length scale ranging from the macro (cell/system) to micro and nano (component/material) level. You will be expected to get trained and support additional characterization techniques, review data from other analysts and coordinate the use of multiple techniques. Resulting in driving the projects by providing materials understanding and correlation between materials properties and performance in a system. Key Qualifications Key Qualifications Hands-on laboratory experience with materials characterization (XRD, Optical, SEM, FIB/SEM, etc.) and mechanical testing (nano-indention, universal testing machines such as Instron, etc.) on battery materials including the determination of appropriate techniques to achieve desired information Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for mechanical characterization of battery materials, components and systems Deep understanding in battery materials, interfaces, electrolytes and electrochemistry to drive mechanistic understanding of battery performance Ability to interpret analytical and cell test data using materials characterization and electrochemical techniques to establish process and property relationships Experience with a database system of leading sample submissions, and preferably experienced in computational and simulation methods for mechanical behavior of batteries and components Description Description • Conduct investigations for process-property-performance relationships in partnership with projects to establish mechanistic understanding vital to advance our battery products • Define the proper material and mechanical characterization techniques for selected samples and implement focused characterization projects to attain the desired information, and drive root-cause analysis and a deep material understanding • Follow established methodology and develop/implement new methods as needed to provide analytical support for all aspects of battery technology development • Acquire, analyze, and interpret data for battery materials characterization (XRD, Optical, SEM, FIB/SEM, ICP, Raman, FTIR, DSC, TGA, GC-MS, Gas Sorption, etc.) and mechanical characterization (micro/nano-indentation, compressive/tensile tests, 3-point bend, adhesion, peel test, etc.) • Train in and support other materials analysis techniques to address needs from projects involving characterization • Adhere to best of class lab practices: maintain an organized laboratory environment including sample storage and archiving, ensure sample piece location is controlled, follow all lab safety laws Education & Experience Education & Experience BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience MS or Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience preferred Additional Requirements Additional Requirements Pay & Benefits Pay & Benefits At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $132,300 and $241,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
