Doctoral Student with the DN EMPOWER-6G Infinera is looking for an excellent intern professional with a master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or physics to join our growing Strategic Architecture Engineering Team in Munich as a PhD student. The doctoral program, which will be carried out within the framework of a collaboration between Infinera and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, and it is part of the Marie Curie Doctoral Network EMPOWER-6G funded by the European Commission. The Marie Curie Network also includes the following partners: IQUADRAT (coordinator), the National Technical University of Athens, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, ISI Athena, the Katholieke Universitet Leuven, IS-WIRELESS, NVIDIA, and SIAE Microelettronica. The topic of the PhD is next generation metro-access optical networks to support beyond 5G mobile transport. The candidate is expected to explore the performance of such systems, and to design and evaluate network scenarios where transceivers use a transmission scheme based on digital subcarriers multiplexing to create coherent point-to-multipoint optical networks. In addition, the candidate could delve into supporting topics – including, but not limited to – such as resource optimization strategies, reduction of energy consumption, backhaul and/or fronthaul capacity management using meta-heuristic and machine learning techniques. The work will be a combination of analytical and numerical analyses, techno-economic studies, and – if possible – experiments.Within the framework of this program, the candidate will work at the site of Infinera in Munich for the first 18 months of her/his doctoral degree. Afterwards, she/he will carry out a secondment of 18 months in Gothenburg at Chalmers to learn about optical networking specifications and complement her/his knowledge. The student will be supervised by Prof. Paolo Monti (Chalmers University), Dr. Antonio Napoli (Infinera), and Dr. Carlos Castro (Infinera).Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities Investigate the transmission performance and economic aspects of digital subcarrier multiplexed optical systems in network scenarios like metro/access aggregation, 6G-fronthaul, PON overlay.Explore novel supporting topics to enhance the functionality and performance of digital subcarrier multiplexed optical networks. Work collaboratively with other forward-thinking team members and external researchers from academic and industryWrite and present internal and public reports such as deliverable and milestones.Write and present technical papers internally and in high-impact journals and conferences from IEEE and OPTICA. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Deep understanding of digital communications and telecommunications systems. Knowledge of digital signal processing and digital subcarrier multiplexing is desired.Fundamental understanding of the most relevant components and devices present in an optical communication system (transceivers, modulators, lasers, detectors, EDFAs, etc.). Hands-on lab experience (i.e., device characterization, experimental work) is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to clearly convey the information regarding the investigation procedure and result analysis in detail. Programming experience in Matlab, Python, Julia, or similar. The candidate must be able to develop his/her own numerical tools to carry out the necessary transmission analyses. Highly attentive to detail, motivated, and possessing troubleshooting skills. Education / Experience: Master’s in electrical engineering/computer science/physics. Masters degree must be completed in the last 3 years.B2-C1 English LevelSimultaneously, you need to submit your CV through a dedicated site of the Marie Curie Network EMPOWE-6G: https://www.5gstepfwd.eu/oaf-2023 Infinera is an equal opportunity employer.
